My computer is relatively new and I have cable internet. However, whenever I go to class, bed or whatever and leave my computer inactive for 2 or more hours, my internet continually quits working. I can never keep AIM up with an away message and I have to manually go into control panel, network and internet connections etc to "repair" my internet after not touching it for a few hours.
Why does it do that and what can I do to fix it?

thanks

Is your computer going into Stand by or Hibernate mode?
If so that's the reason why your computer is acting up. It tend to cause the adapters to go into sleep mode too, causing them to act up.

Your ISP may also have a policy whereby they diconnect you if you are seemingly away for a certain period of time.

Many have implemented this policy especially if you have chosen the lower bandwith solution like LYTE OR BASIC Service.

I've had the same problem in the past and I called the cable company to see why. The guy came out and used a meter to test my signal strength at each split of the cable. You see, every time a splitter is used to make the cable go into two, you lose a bit of signal strength. This is not really an issue for television reception, but it can affect Internet connection dramatically.

Try and connect your cable modem directly to your wall jack if you can. And if you live in a house, check in the basement to make sure that all of your connections and splits are secure. Then reset your modem by unplugging the power and the coax cable for one minute than hook it back up and turn it back on.

If all of that doesn't help, you should do as I did and call the cable company. They found a splitter with that meter that I couldn't find by looking, and that turned out to be the problem. I know this is very frustrating and I hope this helps, good luck!

Check the power settings in control panel.

Make sure that it isn't set to turn off the network adapter in power save mode.

Also, you can try refreshing the ip address in the cable modem.

Click "Start" then "Run" and type "cmd" and click OK.
At the DOS prompt type "IPCONFIG /RENEW" and press enter.

Good Luck!

Sounds like your DHCP service isn't working right, go to your firewall settings (you have a router right?) and make sure the DHCP settings are on automatic renewal. This way you don't loose your IP and can connect to the net.
