Every person in my class so far who has gone up to the board to begin their report started off with something like, "My report is going to be about..." or "The topic I chose for my report is..." which is boring, and the teacher doesn't like it either. How should I start it off then, to keep my classmates from snoring? The teacher strictly said, "Don't start off like that!" and they do it anyway but I don't know how else to start. Thank you in advance!

Start with a headline. For example, if your report is about smoking among adolescents, a powerful way to start is to quote a few statistics.
"Each day, nearly 6,000 children under 18 years of age start smoking; of these, nearly 2,000 will become regular smokers. That is almost 800,000 annually.
Approximately 90 percent of smokers begin smoking before the age of 21."

That becomes the introduction.
The best way to flow is: tell them what you're going to tell them, then tell them, then tell them what you told them.

Good luck!

Start your report with a startling or interesting or unusual fact. Let's pretend your report is about global warming. Start with--"Did you know more methane gas is emitted by cattle every day than by industry?" (I am NOT saying that's true. That's an example). Or more people have now died in Iraq than in WWII (ONLY an example, again). If you were reporting on "Gone With The Wind," you could say: "By writing just one novel, Margaret Mitchell secured a permanent place in history." The other answerer is right, you need a hook. If I knew what your report was about, I think a lot of us could give you better suggestions, but maybe this is enough for you to get the idea.

Start off with a question to the class. Like, " Have you ever wondered about...." or "There are different ways to think about.... and I am going to discuss (one/a few)."

One of the best things to remember when you are giving an oral report is to never forget that you have an audience. Keep them in the forefront, make eye contact..etc.

Good Luck

Use a "hook". Try using a startling statistic or an anecdote. Remember, all reports make the reader or audience sit up and take notice. The more remarkable the better. Good luck!!

Start off with a statement that about the topic. For example, if your report were about hurricane Katrina, you could say something like,
"Hurricane Katrina was the worst natural disaster in the US in our time."

Then the rest of your report should backup the claim you are making.

Try starting off with an interesting quote, or some little known fact about the subject.

Like for an English Literature paper, write, "'It was a dark and stormy night...' long considered to be the worst opening sentence used in literature."

Stuff like that...

If its about fashion in the new year, Start out "fashion in the new year is defined by blah blah blah."

If its about Aids in High School, start out Aids in the High School is becoming an ever increasing problem."

There is no need to tell the teacher your report is about anything. Start out announcing the topic itself.

What is your report about?

If it is about a subject, some fact or anecdote about the subject that people might not realize (did you know a pound of feathers is as heavy as a pound of steel?). If it is a book report, again, something unusual about the book.
