my guy says he can't recall ever not taking every third step on the way up and coming down in two leaps , he had a road accident and now takes one step at a time very cautiously .

0ne at a time coming down, until the bottom two.
Too old to slide down the bannister rail!

this is just an expression.. another way to say I'm going to 'use' the stairs..... instead of lets say the elevator..
