It really depends on the type of computer you have. First you have to check it your video card slot is PCI or PCI Express. If you have an AMD Athalon/Sempron Processor, ATI Radeon works the best. If you have an Intel processor than Nvidia is the way to go. I personally prefer Nvidia it has great picture quality with minimal screen stuttering.

According to a survey by Valve, the makers of Half-Life 2, the most popular graphics card is the nVidia Geforce 6600. A clear favorite among modern graphics cards with 22%, or 9% overall. Personally I like the 6800, although there are certainly newer cards out there.
Of course, if you look at "anyone with a computer" rather than "people who play Valve games", then it's almost certainly the Geforce 440MX (Geforce 4 MX series, not to be confused with Geforce 4), if you don't count integrated (on-the-motherboard) video. The 440MX is dirt cheap last-last-last-gen tech so you can do basic 3D even if you don't play games. It's common to see it in off-the-shelf computers, again not counting integrated.

Something like Nvidia GeForce 6600 as a basic general gaming card, or if higher grade you may want to consider Direct X 10 is released soon and buy the GeForce 9900 GTX which is brand new and higher costing

Don't go with the most popular. The most popular are ones NOT used for gaming. If you are a gamer, not a good choice at all. To find the performance of video cards goto www.tomshardware.com for benchmarks.

The most popular ( shipped with new PCs & retail purchase) are ATI & Nvidia. ..... for consumers.
For professional video capture & editing the prefered choice is Matrox.
