Hi, my computer which has been limping along in a mostly working state for awhile has finally given up the ghost (it died whilst trying to do a scan). To the point where I can't boot it up from the disk (so I can't get to any of the repair windows or anything) and shows different error messages each time.

My hard drive has been making clicking noises for awhile usually just prior to it crashing so I'm fairly sure it is the root of the problem. My question is, is there any way to test the hard drive so I know it's definitely the problem before I pay for a new one?

I can assure you that the hard drive is the problem.
W/henver you start hearing clicking sounds it means that the mechanism that reads the disks are becoming dislodged...you can try hooking it up to another PC but I guarantee you will have the same problem.

Get a boot disk for your version of windows, boot from the floppy or CD rom. Then try and access the hard drive. That's another way.

I think from your description, the hard drive is knackered. No testing is required. It bears all the symptoms.

Just get a new one, its just not worth the hassle.

You might be able to salvage something off it, if you don't mess around with it too much.

I suggest trying your HDD on another computer by slaving it. I can also assure you that if it's making unusual noises then it's given up the ghost. Good luck.

Yes.
Download this DOS based utility to boot with & diagnose the hard drive :
