Yes, they can. A common myth is that all bills are "legal tender" issued by the US government and HAVE to be accepted. A store does not HAVE to accept a particular type of currency, however, anymore than you can pay for a car with pennies.

It's not that they don't want to take it--sometimes they just might not have enough change to take it. It's better to go in and ask if they will be able to break it before pumping gas. I worked at a station for 10 years that saw between 400 to 500 custormers in my 6 hour shift..if 5 or 6 came in all around the same time with 100s it didn't take long before I wasn't able to cash them. most were polite and would come in and ask if I would be able to cash the larger bills. But I did have to turn a few away. do to lack of change nothing else

Yes they sure can. Many of these little stores get robbed. Many people make there own money. Some of these places hire people who do not know how to count out money. Why take the chance on big bills?

At times since we pay in cash a lot, it is a pain in the rear!

Of course they can. There's no law saying they have to sell you anything in the first place unless the reason they refuse to serve you has to do with your race, sex, national origin, or another of the protected groups. It's simply a calculated business decision; they'd rather lose the occasional customer than to have to stuff the cash register with hundreds of dollars in smaller bills every morning and risk losing it if they're robbed.

Absolutely. They are under no requirement to accept fishy-looking bills, large bills, foreign bills, etc. Just as they can refuse service to anyone (except for based on race, sex, etc as protected by law). They are a PRIVATE company. If you do not like the policy, you are free to shop elsewhere!

They do all the time, and they cite safety as the reason. Subway for example does not accept bills over 20's.

Of course they can. It should be noted somewhere on the counter, or a sign posted, that they don't accept large bills.

YES, if that is their policy. However, If I am paying with a large bill, I always pump gas first then, go in and pay that way....they end up having to take my large bill since I already pumped gas!! Hehehehee

Yeah, they can. I've also had toll booths refuse pennies before, which really aggravates me. A penny is American currency, if you're too dumb to count you shouldn't be working in a toll booth.
