My fiance and i found out we are pregnant. He is getting his own apartment soon and i will be moving in with him shortly after the baby is born. He really wants a cat but i am really afraid of the baby getting sick because of diseases that cats can carry. (toxoplasmosis) only spread through the feces. I brought this up to him and he told me hopw it is only spread through Feces but i would still like to wait until the baby is older to have a cat how do i ask him nicely

Explain your concerns to him. Research toxoplasmosis and how it's spread - you should never handle the kitty litter, and the box would certainly need to be kept out of baby's reach if you do get a cat. Find out why he wants one, ask if he'd be willing to wait until your child is a little older. It's all about compromise, but you can't be afraid to bring up the topic and discuss it with him.

Best of luck to you!

I am 30 weeks pregnant. My family has 3 cats. There is really very little chance of getting toxoplasmosis if he cleans the litter box. Also so long as the cat has not been outside in over a month any infection of this kind will have already been fought off and there is no way the cat can have it. There are 2 other considerations for getting a cat though. One NEVER let a cat in the same room with the baby's crib (ecspecially if the baby is in the crib). Cat's have a tendancy to like to curl up next to human faces, this could be a potential SIDS risk. If not letting the cat in the room in not an option you need to get a crib cover (looks sort of like misquito netting) to keep the cat out. The second issue is, when the baby starts crawling. You need to pick a spot to put the kitty box that the baby cannot get to, you wouldn't want them to play in it.

Try to get him to wait till after you get the apartment, there may not be a good place to put the litter box, if that is the case then you should discuss it with him then. If there is a place that will be all of the way where your baby won't be able to get to it then it might not be such a problem, but then you have to make sure there will also be a way to keep the cat away from the baby while you are not watching, the cat could jump in the crib with the baby and hurt him or her.

You also have to tell him he HAS to clean the box every time (not you) while you are pregnant, even if you don't get the cat now doesn't mean you won't be pregnant again after you get the cat.

I have had a cat through both of my pregnancies, the only thing you are restricted from doing is changing the litter box and you may want to make sure the cat stays away from the baby's room/crib, our cat liked to sleep in there and i was constantly changing the sheets. Also make sure the cat doesnt get too friendly with the baby so she doesnt lay on the baby to cuddle, it really just means you have to keep an eye on the baby and the cat as much as possible. I know plenty of people that have done it with cats, dogs, etc. And waiting until later may not help because then the baby will be in the pulling and chasing phase and you may end up with a terrified cat. Better to get them used to each other and the living situation at the same time
Good luck and congratulations

Basically, the only way you will get toxoplasmosis is if you touch the feces with your bare hands and then put your fingers in your mouth, since toxoplasmosis is not airborne. I don't know too many people who are going to pick up poo without gloves. If you have any reservations though, wait. There are too many cats that are dumped because there is a new baby in the house. I am pregnant and have cats. I will use baby gates and close the door to the baby's room during times where the baby is sleeping. Oh, and I still scoop litterboxes, I just wash my hands afterwards.

lots of pregnant people have cats and dont get toxoplasmosis. It sounds like he would be the one to change the litter box and as long as he takes it to the vet for all the right shots then i dont see the problem. However if you research the subject there are some suggestions that you should not get a new cat while pregnant, so i guess if it is bothering you this much research it and then show him the results.

In all actuallity you and the baby will be fine. BUT....never change the litter box and make sure it's in a spot that your baby CAN'T get to. But if you want to be really firm on it then you need to tell your fiance that your putting your foot down, you two will have enough to deal with without getting a cat. Ask him to please wait for you and to wait until you feel ready enough for a cat. You are obviously going through many changes....Getting married, moving in together into a new place, being pregnant....it's alot to deal with without a cat. Good luck!! :)

You are right - wait until the baby is older. You DO NOT want to get a cat now. It's not just the feces. Cats jump into and sleep in the baby's crib and pack n play. They shed everywhere. They can bite and scratch, which is also a health risk to babies. Cats are territorial and some stop using the litter box when a new baby comes. I love cats and I am not saying that people should get rid of their cats when they have babies. I am just saying that people with cats who have babies deal with these issues, and you do not want to invite them onto yourself. Wait until it's the right time, or you may find yourself in a hard situation. Tell your fiance that there will be NO cat and insist. If he wants to marry you, he has to respect your wishes.

Well i myself sure wouldn't want a cat with the baby! Just tell him you really don't want the cat right now. He has lots of time to get a cat. Once the baby comes believe you me he will forget all about that cat! Cats do carry more germs that you know! If he still wants that cat after the baby comes don't let the cat outside, keep it an indoor cat. wont pickup so many germs that way. Good Luck to ya.

that could desire to hitch it. We used to have 5 cats as quickly as a protracted time in the past. One cat won dominance of the gang by way of 2 procedures. First, she won lots of weight. Then she befriended the two (woman) canines. They "observed her" and concept she grow to be their pup. They even fought over her as quickly as. Rocky has grow to be her toddler now, so does that make him the #2 cat contained in the hierarchy?
