Gambia in recent years has become the pearl of West Africa. Countries like Cote D'Ivoire, Nigeria & Senegal; where every tourist would have choosen have in recents times become very unstable (cote d'ivoire in particular) Gambia with its beaches, an exceptionally stable economy & government & with the lowest HIV rate in Africa; its logical that tourist interested in W. Africa have started using Gambia as a first stop

the gambia is popular with alot of tourists now, more popular than ever before.i have found the hotels to be expensive.i stayed at senegambia hotel which was four star for two weeks bed and breakfast, with flight at 688 uk pounds,i have stayed elsewhere for 400 uk pounds for two weeks half board, like tunisia and morocco but when you spend time with gambian families and see the country and culture for what it is,its a small price to pay really.i have since gone back to the gambia and am in touch with various people there and hopefully helping those who are in real need.i know gambian people who live in the uk and understand why they come here, work all the hours and send their money home,to support their families and create a better life.i only wish that i had the finances to move to the gambia and help people there achieve a purpose in life,to create work and education and hopefully spread some happiness. i can honestly tell you that i am very well travelled and the gambia is the only place that i have ever been that has really tugged on the old heart strings.i could recommend it any day and if you go then dont just stay on the beach,go into villages, people will make you so welcome and live how they do. they have nothing but they are so happy with life and what they have, you will come back feeling disgusted with yourself if you are the sort of person who wants more out of your life.

Simple answer - Its Tobaski ( Eid ).
Gambians from all over the World go home to spend time with their families. Its not the accommodation that's all that expensive its the airfares for that time that made it very expensive this year.
I f you to go next week you can stay at a 5-Star Hotel in the Gambia for 2Weeks for Less Than £500 .
