Running mates are selected by candidates at any time during their run for the presidency. They can select whomever they choose, as long as they fit the qualifiactions of the office. The Presidential candidate who selects their running mate (which they are picking to be their Vice President) generally choose the person based on a number of reasons, but mainly for a strategic reason during the race for president. The people don't actually vote for the Vice Presidential candidate alone, rather for the Presidential candidate and the running mate becomes Vice president by proxy.

initially the shape on condition that the vice chairman may be the guy coming in 2d interior the Presidential election. In 1804, the twelfth ammendment allowed for the Electoral college to solid seperate ballots for the President and vice chairman. Presidential applicants chosen who they desire to be their vice chairman/ working mate, yet technically below the twelfth ammendment, that man or woman won't neccessarily get elected because of the fact the vice chairman. yet maximum states positioned the names of the Pres/vice chairman applicants jointly on the pollas a replace of seperatly assuming which you does no longer vote for a Pres from one social gathering and a vice chairman from yet another. and because in maximum states the electorates vote on the group that wins the familiar vote for that state, that's exceptionally no longer likely that a Pres and vice chairman would be elected from diverse events, even however the twelfth helps it.
