I dont kown the history of hooks, but its not good for that hand to be use in the rest room.

im guessing that they use hooks because it is somewhat functional compared to a stub (you can open handles, reach across a table and pull something towards you, etc.) and easy to make, especially with the technology available hundreds of years ago. there is better stuff around though today. but i dont know im not educated on the topic im just guessing

first of all i think nobody in this world wants to loose their hand in the first place. referring to captain hook (peter pan) after he lost his hand, he use the iron hook as his hand. my personal opinion is that if we put all our fingers together (4) and thumb it have C shape like the hook so, it is still possible to hold something with it and at that moment of time maybe that is all technology they have to produce. and also maybe he look fierce :-) to scare people(referring to Captain Hook). or ... maybe you know.
