Some of the Wal-Mart computers are OK, but realize you are spending extra when you purchase from Wal-Mart. You can save a lot by purchasing a laptop directly from the manufacturer.

The best way to purchase it to go online to somewhere like DELL or HP and have them ship one to you. Check out the source for more information...

Buying a computer is somewhat like buying a car. Just because it is cheaper doesn't make it a good bargain. You need to consider the options. If you purchase a computer based strictly on price, you may get less memory, software, hard drive, etc. Thus this can make the functionality of your new purchase less effective for what you may need. If you then purchase the software and options separately, you may very well pay much more than had you purchased the computer elsewhere. Shop around. It could be that Walmart is the best bargain. Enlist the aide of someone you trust to help. Don't always trust the salesperson. Would you trust a car salesman? Ask questions and use common sense. Again, ask for help from someone you trust and who is or has been much in the same boat you are else you may get recommendations for something over your head. Determine your basic needs and stay within your comfort area.

Typically you are dealing with wal mart quality. So it is low. Wal mart makes its profit by telling its vendors what it will buy the item for. So manufacturers typically have to lower the quality to meet the demand.
This doesn't hold 100% true for all the laptops there. But you really need to research the one you are looking at. Ones I know of that have problems are the toshibas. Acer and another brand they sell called everex are bottom of the barrel. The compaqs are a little better. Hp is probably the best that they offer. But again research and compare models carefully.

That depends on what you want to use it for. If you have very simple needs, just want to surf the net, etc. Then yes, they are fine. If you like to play games with a lot of graphics then you will probably need to update the graphics card but other than that, I am sure it's fine for the average web surfer's needs. You will of course be told otherwise by "label snobs" but ignore them. They are the same people that will pay $3.00 for a can of comet you can get for under a $1.00 at Walmart at a different store because they have convinced themselves that Comet at one store is different than Comet at another.

I wouldn't buy an emachine, but HP is fine. I bought mine at Wal-mart for $7 something I think. It is identical to what I would've ordered from their website, so yeah they're good but i wouldn't buy the cheapest one they have. you're making a sizeable investment so while you don't need to waste money on bells and whistles, you should get one that is a couple of notches up from the cheapest one they have

I very well recomend that you dont buy one from walmart.
You can search the web, go to microsoft.com and search for one or buy one from ebay, but you need a credit card and stuff. Look for a IBM store or a Best buy, they should have some.

I hope that helps.

They have been, from my experience, very low-end computers. That's why they are inexpensive. You can beat their prices for the same computers at any computer store.
