actually, i think its more 7 billion. it's about 1/2 through its life expectancy. it will swell into a red giant and swallow the earth well before that...what will happen is we'll all be vaporized...the sun will occupy this space we inhabit. we should make the best of it

As some have answered before me, the Sun will not blow up in terms of a nova.
It's gravitational forces will reduce, and it will slowly expand and will be eventually greater in size then the orbit of the earth.
Then it will shrink and become a white dwarf.
Our Sun does not have enough mass to nova (blow up) like some other stars in the universe.
To tie this in with another question, someone was asking what would happen if the moon struck the earth. That will happen long before the sun causes us any problems.

Actually, several billions of years, but still time is running out to find new inhabitable planets and a space transportation system to move all those knick knacks to our new homes! If man does not learn to live in peace and to respect the environment, we could be an extinct race within hundreds of years and won't have to worry about the sun. I prefer to believe that we will learn to live in peace and learn how to explore the universe.
Possibly ten billion years from now, Earth will be a legend or forgotten entirely by our descendants who live on new worlds. It's difficult to know exactly how people lived on this planet thousands of years ago, let alone millions or billions of years from now. I can't even remember where I put the television remote ten minutes ago. Hopefully, those venturing out for permanent settlements in other star systems will take with them the record of our civilization here on Earth.

It won't really blow up, it will go red giant. The earth will be sucked in most likely and then the sun will go white dwarf for a few billion years. Eventually it will go cold and dark and the entire universe will become a cold dark place after all protons break down about 10^66 years from now.

Actually, the Sun will never blow up. However, in roughly 5 billion years (5,000,000,000 years) the Sun will run out of hydrogen in its core and its outer layers will start to expand. At this point we will be toast, if Earth isn't completely vaporized.
Funny you asked this question today - here's an article all about what will happen when the Sun dies - specifically what will happen to the Moon and it's orbit:

Fun stuff!

The sun will not blow up, it is too small for that. It will expand and consume everything up to the Asteroid Belt. After that, it will cool down into a white dwarf and the planets and objects beyond the orbit of Mars will continue to orbit the sun.

The sun is not either a nova or supernova to explode in the same sense of volcano. Gravitational pressure towards the core (where the energy creates the thermal fusion that produces heat and light) balances the thermal pressure in the core and prevents it from explosion. Also the enormous weight of all the masses in the sun in the overlying layers keeps it in an equilibrium state. Sorry it is not meant to be exploded.

It's actually a few billion years; and the sun won't blow up in the sense of a super nova. It will just expand and fry the inner planets of the solar system

Not several million years, several BILLION years. That is 1,000 times farther in the future. Since we will all be long dead by then, as will at least many thousands of generations of our descendants, I really don't care what will happen next.

Let me correct u, if u don't mind...
The sun's not going to blow up. It will expand so much that it will stretch out till where Jupiter is today. Then it will shrink back into a dead White Dwarf. and then later on it MIGHT even become a black hole.
