What does the white part of the eye look like? If it's pink and has excessive mucus then I would think it would be pink eye. I would call the mom and have her come pick up the child from your care. She will need to take the child to the doctor and get her some antibiotics. My daughter had pink eye when she was an infant and they gave me oral antibiotics for her, not eye drops, but that would depend on the doctor. Make sure you do not touch your eyes unless you have washed your hands really well, pink eye is very contagious. Also, get a washcloth and rinse it in warm water and hold it over the baby's eye to get rid of some of the mucus, that really helps, especially if it's crusty and dried. It will help her eye feel better as well.

Yes it sounds like an eye infection. The dr. will give you some drops to put in your baby's eye. It can get so bad that the eye will be swollen shut in the mornings. Eye infections are very contagious. Be sure to wash your hands after touching the baby's eye or you will get it too. Also, make sure you wash the baby's toys or it will reoccur.

my baby had something similar. sometimes in newborns, the tear duct hasn't fully opened yet in one or sometimes both eyes so, the eye can't drain properly. you need to go to your pediatrician and get a prescription ointment and it will clear up in a day or two. most likely that is what it is but on the other hand it could be an infection. either way the best thing is to have your ped check it out. good luck and congratulations on your new little one!

It sounds like it might be a clogged tear duct. It is very common in newborns. The remedy for that is to regularly massage the corner of the affected eye with your clean finger. I just reread your question and saw you describe it as "around" the eye...this might indicate allergies or possibly pinkeye.

bring your baby to your pediatrician/family doctor. Chances are its only conjunctivits (pink eye) and it's only in one eye, but its better to get it while its only in one eye. Having a small baby with an eye infection is no fun. Good luck!

Its a cold in the eye. Just sterile eydrops, and nothing but the sterile eyedrops though. If it turns a little orange or yellow afterwards that will go away with the infection.
