You should first decide how much room you have to devote to growing fruits/veggies, and also how much sunlight the space that you have gets. Once you know this, you can go to your local nursery or farmers market and get plants that will thrive in that environment. You don't want to get a tomato plant if you only have a window ledge, and you won't want to only have a pot of cilantro if you've got tons more space. Also keep in mind your climate and what your frost dates are... again, a trip to your local nursery should have those questions answered and I've always found people more than happy to help answer any questions I may have. Good black soil with an earthy smell will yeild very well
