I'm wondering if it's really possible to keep music stored forever when it is ripped from a CD to a PC, provided that no virusses or anything like that kill the computer?

You forget that anything stored on a computer is digitized, or in digital format, as opposed to an analog format.

For the most part that means that everything on your computer is stored as a series of numbers.

Theoretically, as a series of numbers, it could be stored forever. There's no wear and tear, no heads to be worn down, no tape to desintegrate over long periods of time. None of that stuff!

The problem with your question has to do with the word "Forever." In actuality, the word "Indefinetely" would have been a better choice.

The difference is that hard drives can stop functioning, computers can break down, and technically, computers can eventually become obsolete.

If you can figure out a way for computers to live on forever, and for hard drives to last forever, then certainly the data contained therein, can last forever.

You can save music on a computer for a while but not forever. There are certain things that can happen to your computer or you do to your computer, for example, System Recovery, which completely erases your hard drive.

As long as the computer doesn't die, it is possible to keep it forever.
