just reading your question made me fill i don't know wrong with me this week!!
But back to the problem my little boy started when he was only 6 months old it was the worst day of my life couldn't afford to stay at home (or i could if i wanted to be yet another stay at home get money off the state mum no i have my pride my baby my problem) he was fine then when he got to one he cryed every time i left him this in turn upset me so after 2 weeks of the same, they told me to wait outside the door after i had left him and listen to him and you know what the little sod did stopped the min i had gone so from that day on i know it was only to make me feel bad and once i was out the room he was fine he's so fine now he moans whens it time to go home.
So i think you should just leave him and he will be fine, Why not do what i did you will feel so much better
Good Luck

i had same a nursery teacher suggested i stay a while and try to play with him and other kids for 15 mins make it as much fun as you can then take him away ! sounds cruel yet after 2 days he was crying to stay just took it one step at a time until he was waving me out door.

first day is always teary, even though you've waited a long time for this day to come. dont worry every child is like that on first day and it gets better and easier as he'll meet new people and be happy playing with them.

i wish i can put my 2 year old in nursery for him to play with other kids.

Oh...I know how you feel....but if you really want him to keep going , you have to make that clear to him...and dig your nails into your palm to keep yourself from crying when you leave him....quick hug and kiss...'mommy will be back at 6:00PM' or whatever...smile and walk away...tell the day care provider what you are going to do so they have someone who will try and get him engaged in an activity to take his mind off you.....its takes time...good luck!

i was really worried when my wee boy went into nursery for the first time as he's painfully shy. you just have to be tough and take him in, give him a kiss then walk away. its really hard but if they see you all emotional they'll cry even more. honestly, once he's in he'll be straight into the sandpit or games and not worry. its heartbreaking but its ok, he'll be fine!
