I wouldn't let it get any colder than that. It will be o.k. if it doesn't stay that cold for over a week. Assuming that 40 is the low and not the high. I have had them in my greenhouse at the temperature and they did good.

I'm in Northern California and we just had 4 nights in a row of temps in the mid 20's. My Scheffalera has been outside on my deck ( with a 4 foot overhang ) for over 2 years now. It is looking just as healthy as it ever has. If it is used to being outside I wouldn't give it a second thought.

Too cold, bring it in. They like a medium temp, 65-70 degrees, not directly near a heat source, medium lighting, and don't let the roots sit in water.
