I was in there for 6 months and had to sleep on a mat on the floor in the cell for a while instead of getting a bed, got out of date food sometimes, didn't get out of the cell some days etc.

They say there are certain things you can't do for health and safety - like smoking - but some of the things like not having a proper bed and bad food aren't good for health and safety either.

When you are in there you can't really complain as you don't want to be seen to be causing trouble but is their certain things that you are entitled to and can you do anything about it after you've been there?

Most states have minimum jail standards, but they are just as their name indicates - "minimum". Plus, the standards vary from state to state. You could probably obtain a copy of those for your state by contacting the branch of government responsible for jail oversite and/or jail inspection.

You are entitled to sit there and take it, since that is your PUNISHMENT for breaking the law. Many jails have criminals sleeping on mats since there aren't enough beds. You're still alive, aren't you? I guess the food wasn't too horrible. Didn't get out of the cell? Simple solution to that... don't get IN the cell in the first place.

The things you're whining about are not things that have "violated" your "rights". Were you beaten by the guards for no reason? Were you hung up by your toes? Were you denied food for days on end? No? Well then, consider yourself lucky.

In the future, if you want a bed, exercise, and fresh food, I recommend that you get a job and follow the law.

I'm not sure if you had any rights but you should defo look into it.

When i read your question even before i saw the answers i knew what most people would say e.g you deserve it cos your inside. Yeah it shouldn't be like a hotel but that still doesn't mean you shoul be treated like an animal, nobody should be made to eat out of date food or sleep on the floor and I'm sure there were a lot more things that happened to you. Also you crime couldn't of been that bad as you only served 6 months.

You should check if anthing can be done now but unfortunately i doubt there will be.

I am amazed at how so many Americans feel about people in prison or jail, they are the nerdo nothing wrong , holier than tho's who will be doing the loudest yelling when they get put in jail, Friend of mine was the same way he said anyone in jail is scum, guess what he was arrested and put in ail for a ticket he had forgotten about, he even cried when they locked him up until the next day when he had to go to court, he complained to the judge about being locked up with a bunch of criminals?? the judge said "well ;you broke the law didn't you? how are you any different, his response but, I am a business owner and obey the law,????in other words he wants a different set of rules for him and all others , I feel these holier than tho's are the same, also , there are many Innocent people in prison, so don't act ignorant the people in prison are no different than you, they just got caught, as every one breaks the law daily, the courts have ruled prisoner has his constitutional right even when he is in jail or prison , but, the jail adminestrators seldom if ever reconginize their rights, as what can they do about it, nothing unless you have a lot of money then you can sue the jail after you get out , then the courts will say your rights were violated , now, do you feel better??? that is all you will, get,

You do (did) have rights. Talk to an attorney if you feel you were abused. Paying for a crime does not make one an animal. Unless it is for harming another person. : ) I hope your life is going in a good direction. Good luck.

You should have no entitlements.

If it were up to me, every jail cell would be 4' tall by 4' wide, and you couldn't stand up straight.

But that's just me.
