don't buy the cute plastic cages. They eat their way out of them. We use a 10 gal. fish tank (w/out the water of course) with a good lid. The lid is wire mesh. Never had one get away from that. But the plastic ones are no good. They can even get sick from the chemicals in the plastic.

It's in a hamster's nature to try to escape. What i'm gonna tell you isn't a joke, it actually works for a friend of mine!
Try puttin those cheap wannabe spy laser alarm sencors for kids. They don't cost much but are pretty effective! When the hamster escapes, the censor will trigger an alarm wich you are able to hear!
It isn't a joke! Try it!
Or if you can't get a set of lasers, buy an aquarium.

If you have a quality escape proof cage and you keep the door closed he won't escape. Just don't buy a cheap cage because he will be able to get out of it.

We use wire cages with a small padlock on the door. Those plastic and wire cage, some of ours were constantly getting out. We locked, taped, weighted lids down, and even used straps to keep them in, but they still got out. One was a momma with 9 babies that were 9 days old and we still never saw how she got out-she got killed by our wolf hybrid. Luckily our one dwarf had newborns and she tried to raise all of them, but we only managed to save 4 in the end. That was 13 months ago.

get an aquarium. Thats what I had. Hamsters like to chew. Cause there teeth are always growing and they have to grind them down. So if you have plastic in there, they will chew on it. Mine have chewed holes before. I like the aquariums better cause its glass and they can't get out. If you get a plastic cage with plastic parts, they could eventually chew a hole in it.

Put your guinea pig in an aquarium that has screen top, and he really shouldn't be able to escape.
