I put my 05 Nissan Micra in for a service and I have been told that I need new brake pads and discs after only 16500 miles and less than two years. They want to charge me £230 for the pleasure. Is this normal?

Brake wear is all about use. It is not affected by time or wheel alignment or some of the other nonsense listed above.

If you have a 50-mile/day highway commute with 2 stops (one at each end of the trip) you are going to get a lot more miles out of your brakes than someone driving the identical car on a 50 mile commute with 20 stops.

You may want to look at your driving habits too. Do you brake when you don't really need to (riding the brakes)? Do you accelerate like a madman from light to light? That kind of stuff.

WHAT kind of car is this?? Perhaps they use INFERIOR parts or improper pads on it. MOST JAPANESE cars using the ORIGNAL discs and pads run the best. GERMANIC cars using GIRLING parts do very well. But NOBODY ever replaces the BRAKE FLUID! Brake fluid ROTS with time gets acidic and then starts to eat up the CALIPER seals and MASETER cylinder seals. If the fluid is changed every 2-3 years with FRESH genuine factory fluid, this will NOT HAPPEN the fluid SPOILS and gets acidic and then becaomes l ike liquid SANDPAPEER with more time. It can LOCK your brake pads up and they will NOT be able to return after you step on the brakes. and then the FLUID will boil and jamb up the MASTER CYLNDER and the calipers. TRY getting a FULL BRAKE FLUID FLUSH AND FILL Under pressure. This MIGHT be the answr for you. OLDE brake fluid loses it's BOILING POINT and will shrivel up your CALIPER and MASTER seals inside. GOOD LUCK!!! Try getting BRAEK Fluid on yoru HANDS and see what happens?!

Your brake callipers could be binding.the seals on the pistons maybe faulty. There could be a multitude of problems, however i would certainly query what the dealer is telling you as this seems excessive wear for so such low mileage.Get an independent garage to check the problem,as they might give you the reason and then you may be able to get the work done under the manufacturers warranty.

Yes. You should have your brake pads replaced periodically. Try not stomping on the brakes so much, start slowing down further away from the stop sign, etc. if possible.

You most likely need to get your rotors turned. Also, the quality of the brake pad has alot to do with how long they last, and like was mentioned also, your driving habits.

Could just be the way you drive. But I would change the brakes myself. and check the rotors. Its not hard and you copy an instruction manual from your nearest library.

it can be brakes can wear out in 10,000 miles it all depends on 2 things, one the quality of the pads and the driving habits.

The thinner your rotors get the more heat they create so the only way to get like new miles is to replace rotors

either your being conned or your wheel alignment is way out , go to a tyre garage and pay about £20 to have your tracking done , ask one of the guys if he thinks your brakes loOK ok while he's sorting your tracking , he'll probably tell you at a glance no extra charge .

Hi

This is quite normal for the pads, but I would query the discs because they shouldn't need changing just yet.
