I recently saw an ad for silent wheels that use a ball bearing system. These are sure to be quiet and remain that way for the lifetime of your hamster. They are expensive but worth it if it means you won't lose sleep. The wheels are made by Brisky and I've listed their link below.

Only one my my rats uses the wheel, but she uses it so much it makes up for the others not using it. I got her a Wodent Wheel. It's the only wheel approved by the ASPCA.

It's pretty silent. All I hear is her feet padding on the surface and some shuffling sounds . Sometimes she gets some litter or poopies in the wheel and they rattle around. Fortunately, it comes apart pretty easily for cleaning ( I soak it in hot soapy dishwater first)

When the wheel occasionally gets a little squeaky, I just put a teeeny tiny bit of graphite dust on the contacts. (be careful with this because the tiny particles in large quantities can be irritating to the respiratory system. blow off the excess particles before putting the wheel back in the cage)

I have had to attach the frame to the side of the cage with zip ties because she uses it so much that, and she can move it around and then it scrapes on parts of the cage.

We have several cages with the silent wheels. You barely hear them at all. My oldest son has 12 cages in his room and 4 have silent wheels and you hear the difference. They will wear out over time, so when you begin to hear them, it's time for a replacement. He's a light sleeper and he said you just get used to the wheels in time.

I bought the silent wheels for both my hamster, and my rats, and I could still hear them. They dont squeak, like metal wheels, which is a big plus, they just make this sort of 'shuffling' noise. they should be called 'quieter than metal" wheels. ....not silent...because silent, they are not.

If you are a light sleeper, and plan on keeping him in your room it may not be such a good idea.
My hamster has a plastic wheel and it is pretty quite, but it still bothers me because i am a light sleeper....

actually, trying to GET to sleep is the problem. It has never WOKE me up..

yes, they work very well, totally worth the few extra dollars you'll spend on one and much easier on the hamsters feet. The ones I've had are solid plastic, so there are no gaps for their little feet to get caught in

never seen one, just oil the hub of wheel where it fits together, most crittertrail cages come with a built in wheel or ball they run in.

yes buying a better one that claims to be silent is well worth it.
