Depends on frequency.

In audible range it will be audible sound wave.

Main direction is along the line, this is the same line joining the centre of the two prongs of the fork. Hence longitudinal waves.

Higher the frequency more penetration in air.

Dog can hear higher frequency so dog whistles are at that frequency and reach 2 miles. Good to have in wilderness.
