For me, it was calc 3 because we were allowed calculators. At my school, Calc 1 is derivatives, Calc 2 is integrals, and Calc 3 is doing Calc 1 and 2 in 3 dimensions. You can't do calc 3 without understanding calc 2 though.

I think that both are difficult at any reputable university. But Calc III will be harder if you don't take Calc II.

At my university, we only had Calc I and II for engineers like me. Third semester math was Differential Equations.

Calculus 2, the start is always tougher.
