I grew up with hidings and I believe all small children need a good hiding now and again, obviously I dont mean a beating.
Im a firm believer in "Spare the Rod and Spoil the Child".
How many of you live in countries where you can still give your children a hiding when needed? and how many actually do?

I was raised in South Africa and my children got a hiding when and if they needed one, but that was seldom.

I am glad you added details because I wasn't sure what you meant by hiding. We most often say spanking in the US. I think a lot of spanking/hiding goes on still. I DO hate it when it is done in public or with great force (beating) and I think it's bad when it is just in anger and not for a reason that will help the child understand their mistake. Sometimes just the threat of a spanking works. I guess my main concern about hiding/spanking is that it may be teaching a child that it is okay to hit and that it is the way to get people's attention or to get what you want or to be heard, etc. Catch 22

Child abuse reporting is on the rise and I believe this is one of the reasons why. Some parents cross the line and are wicked to their children and so it creates a grey area as to what reasonable physical punishment is.

I think that parents are scared of being thought of as abusers and so take the safe side.

for the proper age group of kids and done for actual rebellion it works very well and is in line with the basics of human nature. When done properly there is no danger in warping some kids mind. A parent should only see the need for this occasionally. if the need for this is a regular occurrence outside help should be sought

I was smacked - not for the pain, but for the humiliation.
However, I do not (and will not) smack my daughter.
