Globalization is the expansion of production and consumption around the world. For example, most of the software used in our computers used to be developed in the United States. Now, much of it is developed in India, Romania, Ireland and several other countries. Likewise, the markets for manufactured goods used to be centered in the North America and Western Europe. Now, countries such as China, Russia, India and Brazil have strong consumer markets. This makes it easier to manufacture and sell products in those markets.

Globalization is both a good and bad thing for consumers in the US. It means that there are more manufacturers of consumer products, which increases competition and lowers prices. But it also means that many of these new products come from companies that do not have strong customer service in the US, and the lower prices often means that there is no money left over for customer service. In other words, you might be able to buy a cheap new microwave oven, but getting it fixed will be difficult.

Globalization is a challenge for domestic manufacturing, as companies now face more international competition than ever. One way to meet the competition is to shift manufacturing jobs overseas, where labor costs are lower and regulations are more company-friendly. This is great for the manufacturers but terrible for US workers who did those manufacturing jobs. If too many workers lose their jobs, the economy here could falter so badly that it will slow the flow of consumer goods from overseas and cause a global recession.

One other benefit of globalization is that there are more well-paid workers in more countries around the world. Those workers will want goods and services, many of which can be supplied by US companies. Therefore, as economies in other countries improve, it improves the economy globally.

This is a very quick look at "globalization."
