My computer got this virus "Relevent Knowledge" but deleating it doesn't get rid of it, it brings up tons of IE boxes with a site for anti virus (no i don't click on anything) created links to the sites on my desk top, and put an "anti-virus" tool bar on my IE. When I ran my anti-virus programs, it found the virus, but couldn't get rid of it because it said it was imbedded in files... anyone delt with this or have any ideas?

Viruses are designed so just deleting them doesn't get rid of them. They hide bits and pieces of themselves all over your PC.

First, you need real antivirus software. AVG offers a Free version for home users.

Next, try a spyware scanner. Spyware is different than a virus, and a product designed to scan for one doesn't necessarily find the other. A lot of the so called "Spyware Scanners" are in fact Spyware themselves. Think of it like a doctor who deliberately infects his patients with the Flu or Measles to keep them coming back regularly.

Lavasoft Adaware is a good free product, but Spybot Search and Destroy is also good. Neither one is spyware in disguise, and both are free.

If you're running a recent version of Windows, you can go to Windows update. (It's under the "Tools" menu in Internet Explorer) and install:

All "Critical" updates

The Microsoft Spyware Scanner.

While Adaware and Search and Destroy are both better than the Microsoft spyware scanner, it can't hurt to try out the Microsoft version.

Finally, Make sure you install Microsoft's updates for your computer! Most the viruses and web browser hijackers depend on known security holes in Windows, and if you update your computer's software regularly, you can protect yourself from a lot of them.

A final note: Try using an alternate web browser like Firefox or Opera. Most of the viruses and spyware that can infect you from a web page depend on Internet Explorer. Just using a less common web browser will get rid of a major avenue of attack.

"Relevant Knowledge" is AdWare. If it has not run yet, then you are not yet infected. Open a command window and type this: attrib -a -h -r -s c:\windows\system32 NOTE: The spacing is very important. That will give you the file for you to delete. You can also try using add/remove programs and uninstall it form the system, though do that in safe mode. Lastly, use a spyware software. Some good free ones are SpyBot search and Destroy 1.4, Ad - Aware 2007, and plain old Windows Defender. Good Luck, that one is a toughie.

"Relevant Knowledge" isn't a virus, it's a particularly nasty spyware, and can causethe things you mentioned as being wrong with your computer. The one program recommended to get rid of it is SpyWare Doctor 4, a free download from download.com. Download, install it, make sure you have the latest updates, then run it. Remove all the spyware it finds.

Try running the virus scan with your machine booted into Safe Mode. (Press F8 when the computer is booting up and you should get a menu with various options including safe mode). This may allow you to remove the affected files.
