I know that by law you don't have to give any time off for compassionate leave, but if a close relative dies (say a mother) how much time would most companies give off? And then how much for a less close relative (granny or something)?

I got 3 days of bereavement when my dad passed away. I wound up taking a week off. I was actually on 10 hour days at that time and they had to pay 3-10 hour days per my schedule.

My company gives 4 paid days for close relatives (parents, siblings, grandparents, children), 1 day for relatives by marriage (brother-in-law, sister-in-law) and no time for more distant relatives (aunt, uncle, cousins).

However, if we need more time, we can use our sick days or vacation days or take unpaid time off with supervisor approval.

I took 5 sick days when I had to put my dog to sleep and my boss was ok with it. I was such a mess that I wouldn't have been any use if I had gone to work.

for an immediate family member - grandparent/mum/dad/sibling we give three days as standard. however this is usually treated on an individual basis and sometimes a week/2 weeks are allowed as paid

Check what they will give under FLMA (Family Leave and Medical Act) or cross-reference with the Department of labor on this one.

You should get up to 3 months
