My sister in law had her baby at 32 weeks and she was fine, she didnt stay in NICU. As long as the baby has a enough weight and is breathing properly it will be fine. The doctor would stop her labor if it wasnt safe.

My son was born at 31 weeks 6 1/2 years ago (I went into preterm labor at 28 weeks and got a shot of steroids to improve his lungs and was put on magnesium to stop contracting...I had to go through it again when I started contracting at 29 weeks, but at 31 weeks, I was too far dilated to stop it). He weighed 4 pounds, 3 ounces and was 18 inches long. Luckily the doctors said he was a pound heavier than he should have been at that age. He was able to breathe at birth, so he didn't need a respirator. He did need to be in the NICU for a month though (the policy at the hospital was he could come home at five pounds). He had to be on a feeding tube for a few weeks until he could suck from a bottle...by then, breastfeeding was out. He just couldn't get the hang of it. At three days old, he got jaundice and had to go under the biliruben lights for a few days. He would forget to breathe so he was given caffeine to stimulate his brain into remembering. He came home with a monitor to let us know if he would stop breathing and after a few weeks, he was able to stop using it. Now he's a happy, healthy kid, so all worked out for the best. I'm pregnant again and have to take precautions and go on bedrest so I don't have the same situation as last time. I don't mean to scare you or your friend, but I think it's best to tell what I went through so you and she can know what to expect in this situation. I wish her all the best.

My daughter was born at 31 weeks (3 lbs 14 oz). She was in the NICU for 1 month, and the only reason it was that long was because she was on monitors for Apnea and Heart. They ended up letting us take her home with a mobile monitor that I had to take along with me and keep her hooked up at all times. In the beginning we could not hold her and only touch her occasionally. Had to do with their senses. She was fed with a tube for the first 2 weeks and then a real tiny doll bottle that took over an hour for her to finish....if she didn't fall asleep first. She is 4 now and you would not guess that she was ever 9 weeks early. Extremely healthy and happy.

this will depend alot on the baby. how big he/she is. how his/her breathing is etc.
I'm sure the hospital would do all it could to try and stop the labour, the longer the baby is in the womb the better.
you friend really should have had all this explained to her by her care providers when my friend went 6 wks early they showed her around the babies special care unit and let her know what she could expect after the baby was born.
could you friend ring the hospital for some advice? i feel for her I'm almost 32wks and if my baby started to come now i would be freaking out!!
