Could be a number of factors that have nothing to do with being lazy. Lack of education, lack of transportation to obtain work, family background that has them believing they can do no better in life, early drug - alcohol use , a teen pregnancy or mental illness.
Or the other side of the coin- they had a modest living then lost it due to being fired, company downsizing, business just closed or was destroyed by fire or natural disaster , huge debt due to bad credit or an unexpected death.
As with any group of people each are individuals and have various life stories. Unless you take the time to find out about each it is easier to go through life stereotyping all the poor lazy.....

There are myriad reasons why people are the way they are, but you need to be more specific. Which poor people are your talking about?
In Africa, the greatest reason for poverty is corrupt government and lawlessness.
In Europe, because the ever-increasing burden of socialism (they're running out of other peoples' money) leads to high unemployment and ever-increasing taxes.
In the US, there are myriad reasons for people being poor, but you need to understand that if you look at the people who are currently in the lower 20% of incomes right now, the fact is that 70% or more of them will move to higher income brackets, including the top 20% of income. The US is a very highly mobile society, with great movement between income levels.
For the rest, there are the mentally and physically handicapped, etc, but that's not the most - most is because of bad decisions on the part of the person. The decision to drop out of school. The decision to pursue criminal activity. The decision to have children when a teenager. The decision to do drugs or alcohol.
It is not as if these people did not have opportunities. Sure, in many of their circumstances, they had lesser opportunities and it was harder to achieve, but they had them nonetheless.

Ironically, I know at least a couple people who are scamming the government for SSI checks, by going to a psychiatrist and pretending to be mentally ill, so they can get that check. Obviously, this is extreme laziness. People that don't want to work, don't want to contribute. It is quite sad to see people literally thow their lives away.
I live in appalachia (now, I am from a city) and there are'nt many jobs around here. The people who actually want to build a life they can be proud of, drive 30-90 miles each way, each day to work. Life is'nt supposed to be "easy". But, it is rewarding if you put the effort into it.
Good question!

lets see how many thumbs down i get for the following. This is America. If you cannot provide for your family here you will fail everywhere. The democrats have waged a war on poverty since the 60's. Why are there the same amount at the poverty level today? It's because they want to enjoy their leisure. I do not have a problem with them not working. Life is short why waste it working . But when you cannot provide for your family don't blame anyone else, or stand with your hand out. Most people at poverty level have one or two cars, cable TV, free medical care, food stamps, low rent housing. Why change all of that by working? The social system designed to help the poor make the poor.If you wanted you could provide a descent life for your family digging ditches.I bet there are people who are millionaires who started out that way.

OK this is bound to stir up some people but facts are facts. Blacks have been in this country for 200 years, free for over 140 years, yet Asians and Hispanics have only been coming over here in masses for a little more than a generation. Yet Asians and Hispanics have a higher rate of homeownership and business ownership and their children have a higher rate of college attendance. I know a Hispanic guy in Virginia who started as drywall laborer, lived with 5-6 other guys from I think Guatamala, sent home as much money as he could, saved what he could, then started his own drywall company and within 5 years of coming to America...LEGALLY I might add, was a multi millionaire with over 150 employees. A trure American success story. Certain segments of our society want to spend their lives bitching about how pooly they have been treated and sit on their rears spitting out babies waiting for the Gov't to take care of them and then others come here, grab the bull by the horns and hit the jackpot.

Poor people are poor because of their ignorant,, but that depend from the country they are from. In the USA is because they don't know all the opportunities that the government give them so they could better them self. I think that the illegals are getting all of this government aids, now. That's too bad.

No, No..... STUFF makes people poor.
I think poor people are poor because they lack a proper financial and family education.
I blame that on the ME ME ME generation (circa 1960-present) Face it, when your parents stay in debt 24/7/365, because they want the BEST at all times. It doesn't leave much for the education of little Billy/Mary.
By "most" standards, I know people in my area who could live a life of comfort, and have lots of time to goof off doing the things that make life enjoyable...(going to Cancun each summer ain't one of em) But they choose to ignore the 3 children they have, so they can work 2 jobs to pay for "stuff".

Some of it is laziness or a weak mental attitude. Other parts are probably overcrowding, lack of opportunity, an attraction to crime and drugs, stuff like that.

I think that a lot of poor people are poor because they either don't have the opportunity to change their situation or because they don't put them selves into a situation where they can change their life.
Not one reason for a general problem.
