Most Chinese are either atheists (a kind of dogmatic religion in itself), Buddhists, Taoists, Confucianists or a mix of all three major religions. There are Muslims, Christians, Jews and Baha'is as well.

Does a lack of an official religion benefit China? That is difficult to say. I don't think the Church of England is particularly powerful. Most British people are apathetic towards religion.

China is basically 15th century Catholic. They have a Pope and Cardinals (the leaders of the Communist Party), they have an inquisition which finds and punishes non believers, they have an ideology (the worship of wealth), they have cathedrals such as Mao's tomb and the buildings in and around Tiananem Square. They are also hypocritical and corrupt (as was the Church - and still is really). So it's religion by any other name. And it stinks.

They do not have the right to freely practice religion in China. The only officially sanctioned religions there are run by the government. Some religions, like the Fulan Gong, are not only prohibited, the members are imprisoned.

I suppose it's good if you like oppression and tyranny.

I agree that religion appears to cause a lot of problems/wars but if there wasn't religion 'man' would find something else to fight about!

The vast majority of Chinese are Buddhists. Have you seen in Chinese movies where they light three candlesticks pressed in their palms as in prayer, then bow their heads to kow-tow?. How about Kung Fu movies where bald Shaolin monks are in the temples doing their stuff?. Yes, that's Buddhism.

China does have a religion. They have wedded a lust for power, racism and a lust for money. They are the enemy as much as Islamic nuts. They are just more patient.
