I can tell the difference instantly. From the sounds of it, you've never met a Japanese person.
Also I can tell the difference between people from North China and South China. Northern Chinese are a lot paler and have very rounded eye sockets, though still with an epicanthic fold.
I can also tell Korean, Vietnamese, Malaysian and Indonesian people from sight. I come from Australia where we have a very diverse Asian population. I have found them without exception to be lovely intelligent people and have found them to be good, true friends. I also find that experience gets rid of those nasty preconceptions people are prone to. Why don't you go out and meet some, you'll be pleasantly surprised.
