The simple answer to Mars is that it is a fossil. It used to be a dynamic planet, with a dense atmosphere and with a sea.
It also has a magnetic field which protects its atmosphere from the solar wind.
However, when the interior of Mars cooled, its magnetic field weaken considerably. So the solar wind was strong enough to blow away much of its atmosphere.
It is now a remnant of its glorious past.
