RJ-11 has a 6 pin jack - it a standard phone jack and RJ 45 has an 8 pin jack normally used for ethernet connections and other more demanding communications devices. The reason most people think the rj-11 is a four wire is because that is what they normally see visually in a standard "cat 3" telephone line cable only four wires. But how this works is that a telephone only requires two wires - the red and green pair for "line one". The second pair you see is the yellow and black which is for "line two". You can by a cable that uses all 6 pins in an RJ11 and that's when you would get a line three. A standard cat 5 ethernet cable only uses 4 pins out of the 8 pins for data transmissin - the orange pair and the green pair pins 1,2,3 and 6.
