I would be looking for a known brand of Motherboard. So start with that. Look for one that is for AMD 64 X2 or Intel Core 2 Duo. Do your research now, and pick several alternative brands.

Look at http://www.newegg.com and use their customer ratings as a guide. But also look at the specifications carefully. You want to make a list of several boards for each chip type.

(good golly, I would want a full size motherboard for the ATX case)

Here are some that I would be looking at:
For AMD 64 2X

ASUS A8N5X Socket 939 NVIDIA nForce4 ATX AMD Motherboard

EPoX EP-MF570SLI Socket AM2 NVIDIA nForce 570 SLI MCP ATX AMD Motherboard

ASRock ALiveXFire-eSATA2 Socket AM2 ATI CrossFire Radeon Xpress 1600 ATX AMD Motherboard

EVGA 122-M2-NF59 Socket AM2 NVIDIA nForce 590 SLI MCP ATX AMD Motherboard

ABIT Fatal1ty AN9 32X Socket AM2 NVIDIA nForce 590 SLI MCP/SPP 190 ATX AMD Motherboard

For Intel Core 2 Duo, look at these:

BIOSTAR 945P-A7A (8.0) LGA 775 Intel 945P ATX Intel Motherboard

ABIT AB9 Pro LGA 775 Intel P965 Express ATX Intel Motherboard

EPoX EP-5P965+GLI LGA 775 Intel P965 Express ATX Intel Motherboard

After getting to know several boards, then have alternatives for each. The CPU is gonna be expensive, but everything else will add up too.

When you visit these stores, look for COMBO deals that include the board and brand of your choice. Sometimes, it is less of a hassle if the vendor has this already mounted into a case, where all you have to do, is ADD alot more RAM. Go with the MAXIMUM.

At this point, I would not go with Windows Vista. Install Windows XP on this computer. YES, Vista is only a few days away, but basically, it will SUCK for quite some time. Many large companies will NOT install it, until mid 2008.

Good luck and Happy Computing!

Alienware is sturdy, it extremely is especially designed for gaming. even though it is likewise ridiculously high priced. you will come across basicly comparable specs on different manufacturers (they gained't be precisely the comparable yet no longer a lot difference) for a lot greater value-effective. seek for one with a sturdy pics card. NVIDIA GeForce 8800 sequence or ATI Radeon HD sequence because of the fact they're the terrific interior the industry remarkable now and that they have got DirectX 10 that's the way forward for gaming. Get the workstation with living house windows Vista because of the fact it helps DirectX 10. Get a minimum of 2GB RAM, 3GB is much greater powerful. a sturdy processor could be an Intel center 2 Duo. Get a working laptop or workstation with a majority of those as minimums and you're able to desire to have a sturdy gaming device it extremely is likewise low priced. sturdy luck ^__^

Well, I am not such an expert regarding motherboards & processors, but here's what you should basically look out for :

Intel Core 2 Duo Extreme processor.

An Intel-based nVIDIA SLI motherboard (975X preferably).

nVIDIA GeForce 8800 GTX graphics card. If that's too expensive, go in for a GeForce 7950 GX2.

2 GB of RAM @ 667 MHz.

Atleast a 250 GB Hard Drive (Western Digital, Maxtor or Seagate ) @ 7200 rpm.

Creative X-Fi Elite Pro sound card

Logitech G15 gaming keyboard & G7 laser gaming mouse.

That pretty much covers it all. If you can get a config equal to or better than this, you'll have one monster of a gaming machine on your hands !!
