Give the animal time to settle in if it's new.

You could try touching it gently with a leather glove held by your feeding forceps. This way you can touch it without being bitten. If the snake strikes, touch it again. Repeat as necessary, but no longer than 10-15 minutes at a time - you don't want to stress him too much. Let the snake "know" that if he bites, that won't stop you from handling him (that's the outcome he wants). If at any time he stops biting and just "flinches" away from the glove, touch one more time (if no bite this time, stop, close the tank/cage and call it a day. Message: if I put up with handling for a little while, this human will eventually put me back and go away (the outcome you want). IYou can work up to putting your had in the glove, then try without as the snake gets better with handling. 've handled all my snakes (Never a blood python, though) this way when I first got them. It doesn't work for all, but it's a place to start.

If he's still persistent about biting, you might try this. This idea is from "General Care and Maintenence of Popular Monitors and Tegus" I've never tried it with a snake, but it worked with the one savannah monitor I had. Get the dog product called "Bitter Apple" or "Phooey". It has a very bitter taste, but won't harm the animal. Spray it on the glove and let him bite it. Continue as the first method, but when you first start to work with him with your bare hands, I'd spray you hands, too. Just remember to wash them!

Good luck!
