Is it worth trying to join up to the Merchant Navy as a rating? I've been told that there aren't any Brits serving as ratings any more as foreign labour is a lot cheaper for the shipping companies?

Thanks!

You have been advised correctly and the situation is not just relating to ratings, I served my apprenticeship as a deck officer and sailed as 3rd, 2nd and finally 1st officer on many merchant vessels only to see all the worthwhile jobs being flagged out or taken by cheaper foreign nationals. I know there are still a few British companies afloat but I'm afraid the days of the British seaman have long since gone. Take my advice and look for something else. Our great seafaring heritage has all but gone.

It would be great experience to start an entire career in the ocean transportation sector. Most exams for attaining first, second, third mate etc have some requirement as to ocean-going experience as a pre-requisite. If you're looking to be a ship captain some day, this might be the way to go.

If you're looking to get into transportation and logistics at a different level, this would also be valuable experience.

It all depends on what you want to do down the road.

By the way, the mate above is on the right track as well! The Royal Navy would be a better alternative, it just seems more prestigious!

My father was in the merchant navy from a young boy till he retired, he loved the life. Great chance to meet different people and go to many countries around the world.

Why not the `Royal Navy?` it`s more secure with good training and better prospects :-)
