Given the cost of insanely expensive car insurance, I have put off modifying my car for the forseeable future. However, I want to know if there are any modifications I can do that will not affect my insurance premium. For example, do I need to tell the insurance company if I respary my standard wheels in a different colour? Thanks.

Modifying your car does not increase the premium for your vehicle UNLESS you declare it all as add ons ( foolish not to) and then the premium will go up. For example. If you put spoilers and rims and custom tint or a ground effects kit on your vehicle, then you have spent a considerable amount of money on it. If you declare it as such on your policy, then the insurance company must - in an accident - restore your vehicle to the condition it was in prior to the accident. If you choose not to declare the additions, then they are only obligated to restore it to factory standards. You would then be out all that money you have sunk into the add-ons..
So it is all in what you are willing to accept in case of accident or total loss. If you are willing to lose any monies you put into add ons the you do not need to notify the insurance company of them.

What ever you do, tell your insurance about it, they will use any and every possible reason to riggle out of paying for your car if you have an accident.
I have a very heavily modified 4x4 which the main insurers would not touch with a bardge pole. The only thing original is the doors and bonnet. I declare every modification and my insurance is the grand total of £133 TFT for a £2000 car.

The fact of the matter is you need find an insurance company who likes modified cars, the big insurance companies do not need to waste time with getting details about modifications as they could probably insure 2 cars in the same time.

If you ring your current insurer and ask about modifications you may find they will not allow anything. Try ringing companies like roadsure or sureterm if you want to live in the real world

When I declared my mods(bodykit, wheels etc.) they sent out an independent insurance assessor to inspect the installation of the parts. My renewed policy price then continued to drop with the no claims bonus.
