yes thats right in both cases.and i think its about time too.there is too many young ones running about on a weekend out of their faces on shooters picking fights with people who are out with the intent of having a hassle free night.the laws should have been changed long ago it would have stopped alot of kids going into jail and rehab for drink problems..

For the present, the age at which a person may drink intoxicating liquor in a public house is 18. A lot of pubs will only let people in who can prove they are 21. This is so that the publican can avoid the possibility of selling alcohol to an under age person.

The age at which a person may smoke tobacco is going to be raised to 18 - not sure when this will come into force - sometime 2007.

The USA age for drinking is, I think, 21 so if you go there on holiday and you're under 21, bear this in mind.

just to reply to all those jay on 21 people.

age has nothing to do with drinking problems. It's a cultural thing.
How else do you explain that most European countries have an age limit of 16 and don't know the problems that exist in the UK and ROI. In my country the age limit is 16 and even though allowed over 50% of teenagers don't start drinking before the age of 18. Responsability and common sence have to be taught, also in regards to alcohol and cigarettes. Raising the age limit only raises 2 problems. More illegal booze and more use of other mind altering products i.e. drugs.

You can smoke and drink at any age but you are not allowed to buy the stuff which may be a good thing as most youngsters are short on funds. Most people start drinking way before 18 and will go on doing so

Only if they separate the bar from the dance floor.

Nightclubbing is the culture and the music and the life.

its the alcohol which does not matter.

So we need to be able to be metallers, or goths, or ravers, or rnb types or break dancers.

Not have all culture destroyed as cant go clubbing till too old to dance or develop though music.

Lower the nightclub age to 16 if the bar can be separate

Not heard about the drinking age one, heard about the smoking one.

As much as I agree with it and as much as I hope it would help clear all the scroaty, pis*ed up little b*stards off the streets, I dont think it will make the slightest bit of difference - they'll probably just nick it from their parents booze cupboard.
