I totally agree with you. The way things are going, when i grow up, to bring a child into this world would be terrifying. Just imagine how bad it will be in 10 years time if nothing is done now to stop these inconsiderate, life wasting brats from terrifying the sh!t outta ordinary law abiding citizens. Its a joke. Bring back old fashioned hard work. once and for all.

I think three years is an enormous amount of time in a young person's life. If one is 17 then it is getting on for twenty per cent and I think this too long. Also the question is not directed at ALL teengers and the difficulty is finding the hard core offenders and not just pouncing on the guy who just gets a bit drunk on a Friday night. You may not have noticed but there is very little unemployment as it is. Young people always get blamed for a load of stuff but most grow up and become valuble members of the country without the need to take their freedom away

I agree with what you are proposing, as there is no discipline at the home, with teachers hands being tied behind their backs, and the police being bogged down in paperwork the only option left to instill some discipline and give out of control youths a purpose in life is conscription. I don't think that this should be used to improve unemployment figures, that is a separate issue and needs to be dealt with by the government of the day

My sentiments exactly. Whilst I truly believe that all children need and deserve protection, in this day and age they have too many rights and they know it!
This country has gone crazy with its political correctness, and the ludicrous law that states we must not smack our children! I can proudly say that I smacked all of my four children. They have grown up to be well adjusted and hard working, hard playing, fair and polite adults. This is not me being a proud mother, this is what I expected from my children, no more no less!!
This is where we have gone wrong with our children in this generation today, not enough discipline. Children need boundaries and rules to live by in order to have a routine where they know where they stand.
I could go on forever about the rude and unruly generation of today, but hey, you know the score!
Bring back conscription??? I say I damn well wish they would!!!

Better yet, lets bring back spanking.
(Hey California, are you listening?)
Parents are the first line of defense against bad behavior. I don't advocate harsh treatment, it's not necessary. Just regular attention to the kids and occassional swats to strike the fear of God into them and set their little feet back on the right path.
By the time they're 18, parents should have taught them some form of pride in civic duty, and the kids should be ready to volunteer, either for the military or some other form of public service or charity.

I totally agree with you and say yes. I work with soldiers in Iraq and to see respect for themselves and others at their ages is totally different from the punks I see back in the states. Of course we have a volunteer military of exceptional people and it may lower that expectation with conscripts, however it sure wouldn't hurt and would bring out the best.

Although I am slightly dubious about military training for unruly youngsters I otherwise feel you are onto something.
Although girls tend to take on their adult role without much encouragement, boys have traditionally required initiation into adulthood. It is clear to me that our society has unwisely done away with this with the obvious result of rebel ion at that age.
Various factors, especially the strong matrist trends in the west as well erosion of the authority of older men account for this.
Military service where boys are taught the importance of being part of group is one good (traditional) means of initiation into adulthood.

I agree. You only have to watch programs like Bad Lads Army to see how a bit of discipline can turn their lives around.
And you are right when you say that many young people today don't have any purpose in their lives.
But it will, sadly, never happen as our politicians are too reluctant to turn the clocks back.
