i live in Wakefield west Yorkshire and this is what happens at my doctors.
and just to let you know the midwife cannot hear the heart beat just yet. but as others have said when you have your first scan you will be able to see it.

your first appointment is called a booking in appointment as this is when they gather all the info they need about you and the baby's father and any family conditions. they need all this info so they can give you the best possible care.
Its unlikely they will take any bloods just yet as they have changed it a little over the past few yrs. your bloods will be taken at around 15 weeks when your in your second trimester.
they will however take your blood pressure. and also they will check your height and weight so they can see what your BMI (body mass index) number is, this is so they can give you extra care if you are too much over weight or under weight. all this means is that you will have shared care (1 or 2 more appointments at your local hospital). basically you get chance to have a really good chat and get to know your midwife. plus write any questions you have on a piece of paper so you don't forget them.
so basically all you do is sit there while you are told lost of things, so if you can take someone with you because its hard to take it all in. don't worry and relax
congrats on your pregnancy!!!

CONGRATULATIONS! She will take your blood. This is just to test for different things and check everything is fine n dandy. She will talk you through your notes, take details eg. name, age, how far on you are etc. She may also ask you about family illness's. Heart conditions etc. This can give you the time to get to know your midwife and create a relationship with the person who is going to be keeping an eyes on you and your unborn child to make sure everything goes well. Nothing to worry about. enjoy it. Laura

Ask you lots of questions about you, your history, your thoughts and feelings about the whole thing. They also give you your antenatal record sheet where they mark all the tests and checks they do over the course of your pregnancy. At each visit they will weigh you, check your blood pressure, maybe check your urine, check to listen to baby's heartbeat and check to see if everything is progressing along normally and healthily for the amount of weeks you currently are pregnant. They will also start to do fundal height measurements and check the baby's position and presentation at about 20 weeks.
Best of luck to you with everything!.

The midwife should come out and visit you at home she will ask you a load of questions so she can fill them in. Then will give you your notes which you keep throughout your pregnancy. You will then receive a letter from your hostpital for your first scan etc.
