It really depends on what region the newt is from. If you're talking about a typical pet store firebelly newt then it's best to keep them around 70-75.

However, if you're talking about a native eastern spotted newt then they can take a range of temperatures from 40-85 depending on the season. If keeping them indoors I recommend keeping them around 70.

They are a cold blooded reptile. They can survive cooler water temps But are most active between 60 - 70 deg.

Room temperature. You don't want the water to be too cold or too hot. I have a little salamander and his water usually stays at room temp. Also their bodies adjust to the temperature so if it is too cold he will adjust.

Room temp is best in most cases, depending on the species, of course.
