These days I've been doing intern in this research organization. Although the system is quite transparent, I still keep this question in mind. Is it better to maintain a personal relationship between you and your boss?
What do you guys think of this?

Well, you don't need to be a suck up but it's always recommended to have a polite hello and a few words of small talk on your lips before you say any thing of substance to your boss.

Of course if your boss is in a restricted area, don't break any rules to greet him/her. Only if in the course of the day the two of you have some interaction, it is the politest move.

If the two of you have something in common, like playing golf, try to find out if the company ever does a golf scramble or picnic in order for management and staff to socialize. Don't overdo it, in a social setting, but be yourself and make conversation.

Hope this helps!

It's not good to mix business with pleasure.
