People tend to chose mates that have physical characteristics that are the same as their own.
Why?
Because to you, who is better looking subconciously than yourself?
For example, Brad Pitt has a very distinctive jawline and with his chin prominently placed. If you look at Jennifer Aniston's jaw and chin it's is very similar but more feminine. Then look at Angelina Jolie's jaw and chin. They match Brad Pitt's jaw and chin even more than Jennifer Aniston's jaw and chin.
Did you ever hear the saying that the longer people are married the more they start to look alike? That's why they do so.

It is hard to describe this without drawing diagrams but it is a necessity in the way of things to select a partner who looks similar to yourself. We all look different and you don't get people identical to one another. Now I will describe my theory in terms of noses - if a long nose person was attracted to the opposite i.e. a short nose person they would have a child with an average length nose and if this child then looked for an opposite nose then his or hers issue would have an even more average nose. So we would all end up looking the same if this went on. So the opposite must be true and that is why people are attracted to partners that are similar so that they breed those type of people and keep the population looking different. I hit upon this theory thirty years ago and my friends call it - "the nose picking theory".

Evolution - our genes are pretty good to have made it this far - your body wants to preserve its own genes - the gene pattern closest to us is that of a family member. So you fancy those who are similar looking/acting to yourself. HOWEVER combining DNA that is too similar (I'm not a biologist so don't know the ins and outs of this) can lead to increased mutation - that's why we have laws that stop us marrying our blood relatives. You also don't fancy someone you've been brought up with - this is presumably evolution's way of stopping your DNA combiing with some that may have a good chance of mutating. I was once told that a blood relative not brought up by their family will REALLY fancy them if they ever meet. Remembering all this from evolutionary psychology lectures from 14 years ago so can't provide references I'm afraid : )

They say that people are attracted to people whose looks are familiar to them, sometimes this could be their parents or siblings. It is a face that you grew up with and makes you feel safe therefore you could be attracted to them.

I've never heard of this one before. People always fall for their mums/dads :p You fall for familiarity. If someone is similar to yourself or someone you love you're more inclined to like them
