I've come to a point in a trial where I can't find any way to challenge the defendant, but I'm pretty sure the developers wouldn't have left any dead ends in the story.

I've never heard of any. I know when I played through I got equally frustrated a time or two, but considering how many possible combinations there are of presenting evidence at different parts of testimony it's likely you've just overlooked something.

It gives exact simple directions on what should be done in order. Just don't scroll too far and ruin your own further play by knowing exactly what to do, but it's a great way to find that one part that's killing you.
