the term "prep" is for kids who go to a "preparatory" school. It's like all of the kids who go yachting in Connecticut.

prep in terms of clothing means dressing like a "so-called prep schooler" which is the vest w/diamond shaped design, ties, and the uniformed school look in a way... i think it's cute...anyone can wear it, you just have to know what color, size, and material will flatter your body...i love a good layered polo and tie anyday and anywhere w/ some white air forces and khaki's...be different and try new things and mix it up...what i did is more hip-hoppy lol...but you can also try a rock prep look...do a black vest and black skirt and a dark colored tie..again, i'm only suggesting, but be you and do what you like...good luck

'Preppy' is a style that was exemplified in the movie Annie Hall; it's basically neat, clean-living college kid style, so kilts and pleated skirts below the knee, low-heeled shoes (often the kind with a bar across like in Alice in Wonderland); sweaters neither too tight nor too big (those with a Fair Isle motif around the neck are typical); Alice bands in shoulder-length hair (usually straight, natural colours, shiny if possible). Nothing 'bling' or over the top or overtly sexy - although it's a surprisingly appealing look.

Prep is like what you see on Abercrombie & Fitch.
You can't go wrong being preppy with striped polo tees and khaki pants/knee-length skirts and low-top Keds-style sneakers.
