i learnt by downloading tabs for the songs i wanted to learn from somewhere like guitarmasta.net or ultimateguitar.com then basically playing them untill they sounded right - then things all fell into place and im now writing my own music, failing that pay for a couple of lessons. :-)

There's also wholenote.com, about.com, and lots of websites out there that can lay out the basics. I've played and taught on the side for 20+ years....

1) I would strongly recommend an instructor for the basics. If money's an issue, considering trading, say, mowing the grass for lessons.

2) If you're in school, check out the music department. Particularly if there's a local college/university with a music department, there will always be students willing to teach relatively cheaply.

3) Once you've learned a few chords and songs, find someone else at your level and work with him/her. Decide on a song to learn, copy and share the music/tab/chords, set a date and time, and sit down for an hour or two,and alternate with the melody and chords-that's how Lennon and McCartney, Jagger and Richards, Simon & Garfunkel got started. Before your partner shows up, however, get familiar with the music. Nothing steams people up like being unprepared.

Another idea is if you belong to a church with a contemporary worship group, approach them. Usually, at least one of the musicians teaches on the side. Once you get up to speed, start playing on Sundays.Your original goal may be to be the next Slash, but there are an awful lot of A-list musicians who got started at their local church, and if you're dealing with parental opposition, it's a good wholesome way to get some experience. BTW, Applause can be very addicting!
Good Luck...

It isn't free, sorry, but it's good! The "For Dummies" series is great! Try "Guitar For Dummies". http://www.amazon.com/Guitar-Dummies-Mark-Phillips/dp/076455106X

I play guitar, but I took lessons. I play three instruments.

The "For Dummies" series helped me learn animation and web programs, even more complicated than guitar. The guitar book should be very helpful.
