If you have a firewall check the logs for foreign events, if you have anti-virus software check your PC for trojans. Normally there is some kind of log file or executable (.exe) that has been put somewhere on your system then allows the hacker to access it.

The first sign is your virus software "should" tell you that you have a virus, and \ or your firewall should tell you.

It's not a perfect system but the best you can do is:

1) Get a hardware firewall (router\switch)
2) Get a valid copy of your OS
3) Get AV software
4) Use a software firewall
5) Use spyware software

Some good examples of these are:
AVG Free, Zonealarm, and Spybot Search and Destroy.

THE most important thing is to keep them all up to date!

Ninety nine percent of the time you will not know if you have got a hacker. By their very nature, they try and get into your computer without you knowing about it and when they get into your computer there is not much you can do about it. Sorry for the bad news, but if you have been hacked by someone who knows what they are doing, there is "no" software around at the moment that I know of which will a) detect them and b) remove them. But getting back to your question, unless there are some obvious signs you have a hacker in your system, you may never know !

A personal firewall like Zone Alarm is the best solution and is free....anytime any application accesses the internet it has to go through with your permission only and then no one can hack into your computer...Normally one will need your password to hack into your computer.
