Socially to be able to interact with the public in general, although some people will find this very difficult,

Medically being in good health, and to look after ones self.

Physically being of strong bodied and being able to carry out daily tasks,

Hope this answers of the points you are requiring

I guess, and this is my view, that ability to function means that you are physically OK (i.e, no illnesses etc) and you conform to what society sees as normal behaviour from a normal person.

For me though "normal" is just a majority vote. For example, if 75% of the world thought hopping on 1 leg instead of walking was normal, walking would be considered not socially correct.

Hope that makes sense lol

There's a really good definition by the WHO (World Health Organisation) which may fit the bill. It includes the ability of a person to carry out their activities of daily living, free from disease, etc. Worth checking the WHO site out though...good luck!

'Savoir faire' means knowing just what to do in any situation.
