NO!
Feeding water to a newborn can be DANGEROUS! It can cause water intoxication which is a SERIOUS condition.
http://www.stlouischildrens.org/tabid/88/itemid/166/Water-Intoxication-in-Infants.aspx
Also, giving an infant water means that he will take in less breastmilk or formula. Newborns NEED the calories in breastmilk or formula to grow. Water means you're filling his belly up but not giving him calories to grow! This can mean weight gain problems and milk supply problems.
The AAP says NOTHING but formula or breastmilk for the first 6 months of life.

Water DOES NOT help with newborn "vomit" or "spit up."
Many newborns have milk spit up because their systems are cleaning themselves out. Mucous, merconium, other substances left over from development in the womb all have to be washed away while the organs learn to function. That's why newborns are almost peeing and pooping and spitting up machines!
Babies hate water and new borns don't need it unless they have jaundice, constipation or colic.
Even then, some cultures only give babies water that has been boiled and cooled and others give them camomile or fennel herbal tea that has been cooled.
Most importantly, babies should never be given water from a bottle. Not only does it lead to nipple confusion, but it doesn't give you an idea of how much to give. Basically, in the cases of jaundice, constipation or colic, you give one or two teaspoons to be sucked off the spoon before each feed. Any more, and the baby's tiny tummy won't have room for the milk that contains real nutrition!
Spit up just happens and lots of breastfeeding mothers think that their babies lose everything they've just drunk. It's important to remember that your baby has a tiny tummy and you have to pay attention to the cues he or she gives you. Here are some things you can do to make sure your baby's tummy feels good. It may or may not reduce the amount of spit up.
- Make sure you're holding the baby upright enough and check the seal of the lips around the nipple (both lips should stick out, not curl under) to help reduce the amount of air swallowed during feeding.
- When in doubt, burp the baby again by rubbing his or her belly or giving gentle pats on the back.
- Ensure you aren't over-feeding your baby. Don't wake them up if they sleep through a feed unless your doctor has told you too because the baby is underweight.
- If you are feeding on demand, make the sure the baby is really feeding, not just "topping up." If you think they are feeding every hour because of this, try soothing the baby for 15 minutes before feeding them the next time they ask.
- Look into how to give a baby a massage to help them relax and aid digestion.
- From earliest days, when the baby is awake, give them a few minutes of tummy time a few times a day. It helps them get used to the position and aids their development and digestion. Again, babies should only be put to sleep on their backs, but tummy time is very important. Remember, only when awake on a blanket on the floor and it should be supervised.
Read the articles linked to below for more information.
Good luck, I know spit up is disturbing, but it is completely normal and will get much, much better by the time the baby is 6 weeks-old.

I have never given water to my baby and not sure if you should be giving that but ask your doctor. And to get rid of colic try giving some gripewater if it is worst. But try with some simple solutions like rocking ur baby in arms slowly, walking with baby slowly, Giving stomach massage, bathing baby. if nothing works just put in car seat and swing car seat. You have to really see what works best for your child. Well with my baby ever since i started 100% breastfeeding....I m far away from colic.

NO NO NO - - I can't believe these answers!!! Baby's cannot have water until at least 5-6 months. It screws up their kidneys and can cause SEIZURES. Please talk with your doctor before you give your baby anything that's not breast milk or formula. Don't take the risk of harming your beautiful baby.

you can give the baby water, not plain tap water though. either boil the water and cool it first or buy distilled water. small quantities are good for the baby. most of the fluid should be coming from formula or mothers milk, but if the baby is vomiting it needs to stay hydrated. vomiting in a new born beyond just a small amount of "spit up" can be a sign of an allergy to a formula or a more serious problem and does need to be evaluated by your doctor immediately.

you should not feed a newborn baby water! Its not filling the baby up or giving it what it needs. if they baby keeps throwing up the formula you need to take it to the dr.s and switch the formula. My daughter had the same problem, and my dr. recommended putting her on soy formula and adding some infant cereal to the formula. about a half of a scoop, or a full scoop.

mydt told me to give my baby water between feedings because she was gaining alot of weight in the first monthand was always hungry. I was breast-feeding, i d't know wht the rule is for formula-fed babies but make sure the water is purified either way.
Spit-up usually happens more with formula-fed babies, if you tell your doctor he/she may put your baby on a different formula. But alot of babies spit-up a little bit, if its alot then you should call your doctor soon.
