The other day, there were disgusting questions (obviously by perverts) on the baby section, and I can't believe how many people responded seriously to them instead of seeing that they were trying to wind everyone up..
I think you're right that they're just not intelligent enough though...

when u r posting people cannot hear your sarcasm or see the grin. as for the stupid questions u just can't tell. some are more obvious than others. a way to tell if its a legitimate question is to look at the person's past questions/answers.

Has it occurred to you that there could 3 types? The 2 you described, and people like me who sometimes answer provocative Qs with a straight face in order to upset the person asking.

I think it might its because, Sarcasm is usually a tone of voice we identify with, and when thats not there, people just read the words as words, missing the way they are presented.
